CONTEMPLATION
As I sit here, contemplating who exactly I am,
I cannot help but reflect over my life.
The enjoyable times and the dire,
readily spring to mind.
For we tend only to recall the extremes-
Our most contented of moments-
Or our most heartrending of times.
Most of our life vanishes you see,
into a vast sink hole of mediocrity recollections.
What did you have for lunch on Sept 9th last year?
What color shoes were you wearing?
Who did you speak to?
What was the headline for the day?
Did you laugh out loud?
Now think back to your last birthday.
What did you have for lunch that day?
Who called and wished you birthday greetings?
Did you laugh that day?
Now, I know it is an unpleasant task,
think of when a loved one passed away.
I suspect you recall every somber moment,
with crystal clear clarity.
Perhaps a tear will form in your eye as you evoke that sadness.
Yet it is those seemingly mundane,
everyday moments that make us who we are;
that represent us in our memories to others.
For each and every one is magical, precious and alas fleeting…
You have fewer moments on the earth now,
as when you began to read these assembled words.
So go forth,
and conquer,
each and every one…
