Paul S. Gifford: A Free Bird

A FREE BIRD

A free bird's contented in all that they are,
They can flit down to the grass; or soar to a star
They croon a sweet song, unrepressed and so free
They see splendor and awe in all that they see.

A caged bird wallows in gloom with their captivity
Wondering what they've done so they can't be free.
Their thoughts are restrained by a small shiny cage.
They are too crestfallen to react and fight back with rage.

Both you and I have a choice – to be who we be.
Do we want to be caged? Or do we want to live free?
Do we want to be held back from all of our dreams,
As your control of the world is more than it seems...?
